TFT Forest Projects

The TFT forest projects are how we deliver forest conservation through sustainable management.

Our teams of qualified foresters are currently working in partnership with local forest managers to bring 2.7 million hectares of threatened forest under sustainable management for the long-term benefit of people and wildlife.

The key objective of all our projects is to protect and enhance environmental values, provide benefits for indigenous and other local communities, and ensure economically viability so that the environmental and social values have a secure future.

TFT projects include the first to achieve FSC certification anywhere in the Republic of Congo, Indochina and mainland Malaysia, and a TFT supported community forest is currently the only FSC certified source of teak in Indonesia.

As well as providing expert advice and monitoring, we link the forest projects to our Members' wood products factories. Access to environmentally sensitive markets increases the forest owners' incentive to continue moving towards sustainability. The Forest Projects Programme focuses on forests that are able to supply the timber that our Members need, and as our membership grows, we are able to work with more forests.

TFT Forest Projects are largely funded by our Members' financial contributions. We also receive donations, varying from hundreds of thousands of dollars from major foundations to small amounts given by individuals. Donations enable us to enhance the environmental and social aspects of our forest projects beyond what FSC requires. They also enable us to extend support to forests that have important conservation values, but that may not produce wood for TFT member companies.

A Forest Story takes a look at sustainable forestry

TFT Forest Projects typically go through six stages:

  1. Assess the forest for it's potential to become sustainably managed and to supply TFT members with timber.
  2. Carry out a Gap Assessment to determine which actions are needed to achieve sustainability and FSC certification.
  3. Sign a cooperation agreement with the forest owners.
  4. Develop of a Certification Action Plan (CAP) with the forest managers, based on the Gap Assessment findings, and addressing all environmental, social and economic aspects of forest management identified in the FSC's standards.
  5. Help the forest managers implement the Certification Action Plan and link the forest products to TFT Member businesses.
  6. Continue to monitor and support the forest after certification to raise standards further and address any new problems.

The August 2007 status of TFT's forest projects throughout the world is presented below.   Refer to the Project Portfolio for more information about each of the sites.
